Far From The Madding Crowd

"Resistance to the organised mass can be effected only by the man who is as well organised in his individuality as the mass itself."

C. G. Jung, The Undiscovered Self 1

The quest for a greater understanding through self-knowledge and peace of mind, traditionally the preoccupation of only a few individuals, is now becoming more relevant to the predicament of the average person carried along in the manipulated crowds of our increasingly mass-orientated society. In response to the relentless, lemming-like drive towards collectivism one can envisage a great resurgence of spirituality, and concern for the individual coming not from the politicians, the churches or the media but instead welling up from within ordinary people as a basic need for self-expression and fulfilment of purpose.

That unique and natural predisposition to be ourselves, which cannot safely be ignored, the root of our very being, must also be anchored in humanity as a whole if we are not to wither away inside and perish as individuals and ultimately, as a species. We are truly united in peace and harmony only through the kingdom within, not by the rhetoric without which thrives on insecurity, obscuring Love in confusion and conflict.
